One of the most visited cities in Europe, Geneva has in recent years become popular with tourists who appreciate the multi-cultural attitude that is present in the Swiss town as a result of it's status as a centre of international politics. While French is the official language spoken, it is not unusual to hear English, Russian, Spanish, Swiss German, Italian, Arabic and Portuguese; and the city's many restaurants and bars reflect this diversity. There is much to keep visitors occupied in Geneva, including the famous water fountain Jet d'Eau, the beautiful Cathedrale Saint Pierre, and the building that housed the League of Nations, Palais des Nations. Geneva also has a number of museums and parks that are well worth visiting, as well as being in close proximity to a number of top-class ski resorts. Geneva is of course positioned right on the Swiss-French border, so it is also possible to trip over the border into France if you so desire.
Geneva is serviced by Geneva Cointrin International Airport, a bustling centre which sees well over ten million passengers each year. Due to it's position literally on the border between France and Switzerland, there are actually two immigration zones - one that diverts passengers into France, and one into Switzerland. When hiring a car it is important to note where your hire car company is located within the airport, as some companies have desks in the French section rather than the Swiss. It is possible to get through to the French side of the airport providing you have a valid airline ticket and booking documentation for your car. Companies present within the airport include Europcar, National, Hertz, Budget, Avis, Alamo and Sixt.
